The FADAMA III Additional Financing (AF) Programme says it is collaborating with the World Bank in training 300 graduates in agriculture and agro-allied business in Niger.

Mr Tayo Adewuni, the National Project Coordinator of FADAMA, said this during his visit to the training centre in Mokwa.

Adewuni said that the ongoing training in 23 states was aimed at reducing the high rate of unemployment, adding that the two-week training was carried out under the FADAMA Graduate Unemployed Youth Support Enterprises Development Programme.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 100 youths are currently undergoing training in three centres across the state — Federal University of Technology, Minna, Ibrahim Badamasi University, Lapai and Niger State College of Agriculture, Mokwa.

“The main objective of this training is to reduce youth restiveness among the youth in the country.

“Each of the 23 states will train 300 candidates and come up with the best 200 candidates,’’ he said.

The project coordinator said that each of the 200 successful trainees would be given between ₦750, 000 and ₦1 million as grant to start a business of his or her choice.

He expressed satisfaction with the training arrangements in the state, adding that the programme, which started in July this year, would last for three years.

“These centres will perform better than those of other states because the Niger State FADAMA Office is always leading in all our programmes,’’ he said.

He, however, advised the trainees to take the training serious and utilise the skills they acquired in the course of the training.

Earlier, Mr Aliyu Kutigi, the State Project Coordinator of FADAMA, said that the aim of the training programme was to develop the interest of unemployed graduates in the agricultural and business sectors.

Kutigi said that the training would equip the beneficiaries with technical and practical skills that would enhance their competitiveness in entrepreneurship in the entire agricultural value chain.

Hajiya Fatima Ibrahim, a participant who spoke on behalf of the trainees, said that they would utilise the knowledge they acquired during the training to develop the country’s agricultural sector.

She thanked the FADAMA Programme and the World Bank for the training.

NAN recalls that Malam Bashir Dayyabu, the National Communication Officer of FADAMA III AF project, once said that the project would train 6, 900 youths in 23 states in agriculture and agro-allied business.
