It was a narrow escape, but one the Colorado men’s basketball team will gladly take.

Overcoming a pesky, hot-shooting performance from Omaha, the Buffs barely held off the visiting Mavericks down the stretch to escape with a 79-75 nonconference win Friday night at the CU Events Center.

A steal by Tyler Bey that he turned into a fast break layup and a 3-point play gave the Buffs a 77-72 edge with 29.9 seconds remaining. Omaha’s Zach Jackson answered with a 3-pointer and, following a turnover from CU point guard McKinley Wright, Omaha had a chance to tie or even take the lead. However, a turnover kept the Mavericks from getting off a shot.

Wright made amends for a five-turnover night by knocking down two free throws with 7.4 seconds left to ice the win.

Five players scored in double figures for the Buffs led by 16 points apiece from Bey and Lucas Siewert. Sophomore guard D’Shawn Schwartz recorded career-high totals of 15 points and seven rebounds.
